Description

Follow the last voyage of the RMS Lusitania through the eyes of young Edmund Blessing as he sails to England on a voyage of self discovery and unexpected romance.

All over the British Empire of 1915 earnest young men are answering the call to join the Royal Army and fight the "Hun." Fresh out of a Toronto seminary, Edmund plans to do his part by signing up to serve as an army chaplain. His weak eyes wouldn't give him much of an advantage with a firearm, but he believes he can bring spiritual comfort to the Tommies in the trenches of France or Belgium. His Aunt Winnie, sure she'll never see him again, has booked him passage on the R.M.S. Lusitania, swift sister to the much celebrated Mauretania. By a stroke of luck he ends up with a cabin meant for four all to himself.

Lonely and shy, largely having kept to himself at school in terror of being labeled as a deviate along with the disgraced classmate who dogged him for an entire semester, Edmund is nevertheless taken with the steward assigned to his cabin, a young fellow from Wales a few years his junior.

David Evans loves his ship and he loves his job. It's a grand step up from shoveling coal into boilers like his dad did. Lame from a childhood accident that left him with a permanent limp, David is lucky to have the work in place of more able bodied men answering the call of duty on the battlefields of Europe. It's a point of pride for him to give the passengers in his charge the best service he can.

On a bold whim, Edmund asks David to bring him tea just before he goes off duty. Given a chance to get to know each other, the two young men get on like a house on fire. Over a tea tray, they make discoveries about themselves and each other that reorder their future and force Edmund to reconsider what God might intend for a man like him.

Meanwhile the swift and elegant Lusitania has an inescapable date with destiny off the Old Head of Kinsale.
