Lonely and shy, largely having kept to himself at school in terror of being labeled as a deviate along with the disgraced classmate who dogged him for an entire semester, Edmund is nevertheless taken with the steward assigned to his cabin, a young fellow from Wales a few years his junior.

David Evans loves his ship and he loves his job. It's a grand step up from shoveling coal into boilers like his dad did. Lame from a childhood accident that left him with a permanent limp, David is lucky to have the work in place of more able bodied men answering the call of duty on the battlefields of Europe.
