"That day I met Alexis, I'd never had any illusions I would ever amount to much."

And so begins a love story set along the shores of East Bay near Pensacola, Florida. Alexis, sixteen and already stunning, daughter of a shrimper, poor, but with goals of becoming something more. Wade, a year younger, smitten by this older girl, joins Alexis to form a crabbing business. He has no idea how tragic that decision will be. Then comes pudgy Carla, who sits with them at the school lunch table. Carla is smart, daughter of a prominent lawyer, and she seems taken with Wade. When she invites them both to a party her brother is throwing at her parents' house, that innocent action precipitates events that change all of their lives.

Together these three teens are destined for greatness, but at terrible cost. While Wade enjoys the company of two girls and comes of age with both of them, murder, rape, and unspeakable violence intrude. Wade is changed after his vengeance on two killers, but is unable to escape further violence. Nor is he able to understand Alexis' treatment of him. Nevertheless, he forges on, pulling the two girls along with him to a success none of them ever expected. Can the three hold on to it? Overcome their past? Finally enjoy the fruits of their labor? That's the unknowable future that unfolds with twists and turns that none of them could have foreseen.

If you don't mind having to reflect a few moments at the end of a story to figure out what just happened, this tale might be for you. Just be warned, this is no formulaic, run of the mill, love story. And it doesn't take long for that to become clear.
