Description
David Stewart, a happily married businessman returns to his home one evening to find a note left on the table advising him that his wife Janine has had enough and left him. He is devastated by this and finds it quite unacceptable that she would ever do such a thing, and he rapidly comes to the conclusion that she has not left of her own free will, but nobody initially believes him. When no trace of her is discovered, and her car is later found abandoned in local woodland he fears the worst yet remains determined to find her. And then a body is found in the woods, not of Janine, but another young woman, and the finger of suspicion becomes directed towards him as the killer the police have been seeking for a long time, a mysterious serial killer known in the popular press as 'The Valentine Strangler'. Fearing that at any stage he may be arrested for murder, David is determined to do everything in his power to find his wife whom he is convinced still lives, and then as he falls into the clutches of the Valentine Strangler himself, help comes from a source he had no right to expect.Revised - Oct 2014Extract [From Chapter 4]"Mr David Stewart?" enquired the taller and older of the two men."Yes?""I'm Detective Inspector Hallet," the man said, flashing a warrant card in front of him as he spoke, "and this is Detective Sergeant Carpenter, may we come in?"A feeling of shock coursed through David, and he felt for a moment as if he was about to faint. "It's my wife isn't it?" he hazarded, "you've found her?""I think you should go inside and sit down, Mr Stewart," the Inspector said in a matter-of-fact sort of voice as he made to enter, "you look as if you are about to faint."David retreated from the door, and the two plain-clothes officers followed him to the lounge after closing the front door behind them. Mentally preparing himself for the worst possible news David sank down into a chair, the senior officer sat in one opposite him, and the sergeant stood by the door.
