The city of Jaisalmer is located on a ridge of golden-yellow sandstone, in the midst of the Thar Desert in India. The city is also nicknamed as "the golden city." The city is crowned by the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort, which forms a part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title "Hill Forts of Rajasthan."
There are shops, hotels and age old havelis (homes) inside the fort area where families have lived for generations. This makes the living fort of Jaisalmer different from the other forts of the country.
