In The Dead of Winter, a small band of individuals, brought together by a forward looking Army commander, have survived the initial rise of the dead. Fortifying a remote resort in south central Nebraska, the newly formed community organizes and begins looking for pockets of other survivors. With winter on the way, the group focuses on stockpiling to see them through the season. As fall begins to turn to winter a rogue military group, out of California, finds their way to Nebraska. Using a ruse of being authorized by a fictional reorganized government, the rogue group gets hold of the community. To squelch any rebellion, the rogue band asserts their domination, quickly and brutally. The town's council leader, Mac McPherson, must make the choice to escape into a world ruled by the dead. As Mac sets out on a crosscountry trek to find a group strong enough to defeat their captors, new bride and expectant mother, Crystal Grey is left to maintain the resolve and hope of the townspeople. Escalating his men's violence against the townspeople, the rogue General, tightens his hold. Crystal finds herself in a race against time, to wait on Mac's return or rally the beaten and broken townspeople and survive the dead of winter.
