Description
Because of three deaths on the assembly line at Boeing, in 1943, no one on the line wanted to work on 'airframe-15'. "She's cursed," the workers said as they avoided the incomplete plane. For three months, the big B-29 bomber sat on the tarmac outside Boeing's main assembly building without engines and awaited her fate.
Destined to be scrapped, the bomber was finally rescued by Don Douglas and the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. Now, with new engines and crew, the big plane was headed for Hawaii and then for China. The so called curse seemed to be a thing of the past, until arrival over Hawaii - then everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Nothing could save the big bomber now but a miracle.
