El poeta que hace muchos años dijo pertenecer a "un pueblo de grandes comedores de serpientes" (Los cuadernos del destierro, 1960) no ha dejado nunca de buscar la palabra "que sea como el temblor que la sostiene" (Intemperie, (1977). A lo largo de los años su constancia en esa búsqueda le ha permitido componer una obra honda y sólida, paralela a su labor docente y a la escritura luminosa de ensayos, fragmentos y aforismos que bien pueden ser leídos no sólo como pensamiento, sino también como otra forma de su poesía. Rafael Cadenas (Barquisimeto, Venezuela, 1930) es hoy uno de los poetas vivos más importantes de la lengua española. Vive en Caracas, donde es la conciencia intelectual de su afligida Venezuela. Como dijo el escritor Antonio López Ortega, Rafael es también "el país Cadenas". Un país en el que podemos sobrevivir y resistir.
