Description
Tomas Rivera was born the son of a plantation owner in Cuba. Soon thereafter, his father was imprisoned by Castro after the infamous Bay of Pigs invasion failed. His mother attempted to escape Cuba with him by boat, as did thousands of others, but she parished in a storm off Key West, only a few yards from safety. Tomas, only an infant, was rescued and raised at the Far Away Campground in the Ocala National Forest under the surname Rines by friends of his father, two former Green Berets, Bob Rines and Scott Walker. Fast forward a few years, Tommy, now a young teenager, and Mike Gray and his sister Marris from New York State, have become seasonal friends. That's where this story begins.
The story unfolds in a still-recent historical setting, the mid-1970s, in the very real forest town of Salt Springs on Lake Kerr. You will relive some of your own childhood moments and memories, joys and fears, with a smile and a tear as they find treasure, trouble and danger in their adventures. You'll meet their friends and families and the two former Green Berets with whom the boys conspire to rescue Tom's father from prison in Cuba. You'll feel their fear when they encounter airboats, airplanes, snakes, and international smugglers with whom they must deal as they undertake a smuggler's payoff in the forest and a dangerous mission to cross the Straits of Florida at night. The plan goes terribly awry. The mission succeeds, mostly, but no one escapes unscathed. Get set for this first installment of the Salt Springs Series - Dragon Fighters Trilogy, about life, love, fear and courage. And then, follow their story in volume #2 of the series, FEAR NOT THE DRAGON, and the final installment, volume #3, THERE IS A TIDE, also available only in paperback in a single large volume - THE LEGEND OF TOMAS RIVERA.
