The first time I dreamed of the ruby, I woke up with blood on my pillow and fire in my lungs.

That should've been my warning.

I joined the coastal guard of Roanfire to prove myself -- not just as a soldier, but as someone worthy of the name Brendagger. My guardian raised me to be sharp, disciplined, and focused. But nothing could prepare me for him -- a stranger with secrets in his mismatched eyes -- or the nightmares that started soon after.
