The author was born because of his parents having been alive and gotten married. Of course, this is the case for most Japanese people today; in the case of the author, however, whose Mother experienced the A-bomb in Nagasaki and Father participated in a Kamikaze Attack on a Navy bomber, a stroke of fortunate chance, as ultimately the chances of both his parents surviving such circumstances was very small. There was so much luck and such a strong eagerness to live that made them survive; consequently, the author and his brother were born. In the early 1960s, the 7-year-old author went to Singapore together with his family and heard about what the Japanese army had done in Singapore. The Overseas Chinese people and English people in Singapore harbored a strong hatred towards the Japanese at that time. The author thought that, after the war, Japan had become a good country and was trying to rebuild the economy that had been destroyed by the war. He was happy to live together with his parents, who were themselves trying to help the Japanese economy recover, even if it might have meant some hardships for him. Later, when the author returned to Japan, he was rather disappointed that his love towards Japan did not help him readapt easily. Years later, when the author had grown up and worked for four years, he had a chance to go to the United States and rediscovered the big, diverse world he had experienced during childhood. About the author: Born in Kobe, Hyogo prefecture in 1954, the author lived briefly in Tokyo, before moving to Singapore with his family (1961-1964). He came back to Japan when he was a fifth grader and was enrolled at Iwazono Primary School, in Ashiya City, Hyogo prefecture. (Incidentally, current Tokyo Municipal Governor, Yuriko Koike was one year his senior in this school.) The author later graduated from Yamate Junior High School and Kobe Senior High School. LLB, University of Tokyo,1976. (Incidentally, Michiko Kanba, who died in a demonstration against the Japan-US Security Treaty in 1960 was enrolled in same Junior High, Senior High and University.) The author graduated from Harvard Business School with an MBA in 1982. After working for the Taiyo Kobe Bank (Currently Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation,) the author joined the Boston Consulting Group in Tokyo (1982-1993). Clients of his strategy projects included both Japanese and Western corporations. While at BCG, the author was transferred to the Düsseldorf Office in Germany (1989-1990, the year of East West Unification). In1991, the author became a Board Member of BCG Inc., and Vice President of Tokyo Office. (Currently, this position is known as "Partner and Managing Director.") After his time at BCG, the author returned to academia, and became an Associate Professor and then Professor at Osaka International University. Since 2002, the author has been a Professor at Waseda Business School (Graduate School of Business and Finance, Waseda University).
