Dinah Cavendish glanced around the room, trying to keep her expression friendly as all twenty-year-old ladies who were looking for a husband should.
The ball, held in the Viscount of Scarsdale's London house, was an undisputed success. The crowd, added to the July heat, meant that it wasn't exactly pleasant inside, so Dinah signaled her friend, Amelia Tilbury, to meet her at the terrace and she made her way there.
"How are there so many people here? All of London must be in attendance," Amelia smiled and whispered as she stood next to Dinah. "Oh, your hair," she extended her right hand, the white glove covering it, as she hovered just over the white beads that were fixed into Dinah's black hair, which was in a low chignon.
"Thank you," Dinah's green eyes were shining, and the soft lights made her pale complexion glow. Her ivory empire dress and matching gloves made her appear almost like a spirit; she wasn't particularly tall, and she knew she had supple curves that some women envied while others considered slightly excessive, but none of that mattered to her. "Your dress is beautiful," she grazed the light green fabric that flowed as Amelia's red hair and light complexion contrasted in such a way that she looked almost ethereal.
They were good friends, even if they had little in common, yet they enjoyed each other's company and trusted each other a lot.
"Have you seen Uriana?" Dinah asked.
"No, but seeing as how she's a newlywed, I wouldn't be surprised if she decides to miss a few balls to spend time with Edmund," Amelia replied with a teasing grin.
Dinah tried not to grin; she was four years younger than Amelia and Uriana, and was still shy and occasionally embarrassed talking about some topics, which could be seen in the blush that spread over her round cheeks.
"Are you looking to dance with someone tonight?" Amelia asked.
"Not any more than you," Dinah answered with a small grin.
"I'm afraid there are no dukes here to try to charm into marrying a spinster, so I have no expectations. You, on the other hand -- "
"You're beautiful and smart," Dinah interrupted her friend. "And you're also four-and-twenty; that's hardly a spinster."
"I also have opinions, which is unfortunately not one of the accomplishments men look for in dutiful wives," Amelia's lips twitched to form a subtle smirk that she quickly altered into a more delicate smile.
"Don't be silly, you'll find someone when the time is right," Dinah tried to dismiss what negative ideas Amelia had about her romantic prospects; she knew that Amelia had to face certain obstacles in the form of past rumors to try to acquire a husband, yet Dinah couldn't deny that her friend was strong and content being on her own, too.
