Maurice starts his book out by giving us account of his first memory of life at the young age of three years.
He sees his mother as a very caring, gentle woman and sees the same in his four older brothers.
On the outside his father is seen as a hard working, church going, caring man that would do anything for anyone, but within the home he was an Evil sadistic manipulative violent predator that got immense pleasure in torturing small kids. Maurice hopes in time that the man that was meant to care and lookout for him would change and he could start to live a normal and happy childhood. But as time goes on his fathers evil ways escalate and a shocking and unimaginable string of events unfold that turns into an abusive nightmare.
As the abuse goes on Maurice decides to stay quiet about what was happening to him, thinking this would mentally destroy his mother, and that his father would end his life if he ever spoke out. His father cuts off everyone in his life that could potentially protect him, he is left to fight for survival, and only he now can save himself.
