Description

This book was first written in 2005, which when you look at the progression of our beautiful game is a long time to rear its head above the water again. But with a different approach and that old Dunkirk spirit, we go again.

During the 2004/05 season, BBC1 football focus ran a nationwide hunt to find British football clubs, all-time cult hero.

This could mean anything from the goals you scored, the way you played, or even the effort you put into your game, with zero results. The clothes you wore, the hairstyle you sported or dare I say it, you're off the field activities. Anything that got the supporters taking you to their collective hearts.

Some of the nominees and winners were cast in stone, and then there were some that would divide opinion (healthy debate is always welcome wouldn't you say?)

But with hundreds of players from a club's rich history to choose from, not everyone would agree.

When it became the turn of Scunthorpe Utd, I being a football fan through and through, weighed in with my winner (or so I thought). I don't follow Scunthorpe, but as I mentioned I love all aspects of the game, including my own team.

A player for whom I'd read a lot about in shoot magazines back in the day and a players face that would adorn the Div 4 leading marksman chart week in week out.

A lofty perch even Sir Alex Ferguson couldn't breach. A player who's only dream was to pull on the red n white of his beloved Sheffield United.

And a player who wore his (iron) shirt with immense pride and pleasure, leaving behind a treasure trove of wonderful memories.

Unfortunately, our man didn't make the nominated players put forward by Scunthorpe, and this is where I came into play.
I located my cult hero and ask him to tell me his story... A response to the snub if you like. And by the way, he said the nominated (3) were worthy choices, which just goes to show the measure of the man.

So, after a year or so of writing, we put together a real story of a footballer's lot before all the glitz and glamour of the modern game.

No bling, no wags, and definitely no money. Oh... and your winner
