Description
"This supernatural story is a compelling read. I loved it... "
"If you are a fan of the supernatural and ghost story genre, you will not be disappointed."
"The stories are all interlinked... , so this isn't just a compendium of haunting legends."
Tom Stenner, a young newspaper reporter, is given the task of collating supernatural stories from his home city of Bristol, sent in by local readers, and he is soon inundated with tales of old-fashioned hauntings, poltergeists, time-shifts, apparitions, historic ghouls and an eerie fog. As he delves deeper into the strange (and seemingly random) tales his personal involvement accelerates, becoming increasingly entwined with dark English folklore and superstitions which threaten to overwhelm him and those closest to him.
Bristol has witnessed many centuries of human history, and evolved due to its importance as a maritime hub. Many souls have been born here, lived here, prospered, suffered, passed through on a one-way ticket, arrived and decided to stay, died here peacefully or at the violent hand of another, and endured the Blitz, so it is little wonder that the dead do not always rest in peace.
A NOTE TO THE READER: all of the Bristol locations mentioned in this fictitious novel exist, and the references to actual events in the past are as accurate as possible. Some of the historical context, however, has been embellished for dramatic effect (notably the chapters on 'Brislington Regional War Room' and 'Bristol North Baths'), whereas the ghost stories themselves are entirely the product of the author's imagination, even when some focus upon individuals known to have been associated with the city during its long and momentous development. Whilst the main narrative is set in 21st Century Bristol, this book may appeal to those who prefer the more traditional Victorian approach to the telling of paranormal tales. The novel is enhanced by the inclusion of a number of original line drawings, specially commissioned to depict well-known (and some not so familiar) locations in this famous West Country city. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Nick was born during 1967 and christened in the North Bristol church of Winterbourne. His father was working on Concorde at B.A.C. in Filton at the time. Nick has maintained an enduring interest in Bristol and its history ever since. "There are ghosts around every corner, spirits of old Bristol in the harbour and the warehouses, the taverns and the factories; borne in on the sea and on the tide, [and] from the ploughed fields and primordial woodlands of the ancient hamlets... "
(This is a stand-alone book but it is nonetheless linked with my other novel 'Rhondda Ghost Stories', which is also available on Amazon)
