Biography
Rainer M. Rilke (1875-1926), the son of a Prague civil servant, began studying in 1896, first in Prague, then in Munich and Berlin, where he focused on creating poems rather than learning. He divorced Clara Westhoff, a sculptress, in Worpswede in 1902. Following that, he journeyed to Italy, Scandinavia, and France. In Paris, he met Rodin and became his personal secretary. It came to a halt after only eight months. Years of uneven travel followed, with stops in a variety of European towns. Rilke was prepared to make any sacrifice for the sake of his work following his choice to forsake his profession and become a pure poet. He gave his life for his art and achieved immortality via the creation of unmatched masterpieces of language and art. He was enlisted into the Austrian army during World War I but was transferred to the Vienna War Archives due to his weak health. Rilke died in Val Mont, near Montreux, following a lengthy illness.
