Description
We all refer to ourselves as "I." It is both intimate and familiar, as well as universal. But rarely do we question what we mean by the term, and once the quest into our essential nature begins, we realize that the self-concept is predicated on false assumptions. What's more, it is ultimately unreal.
You are not who you think you are. The ego is a mental construct in a constant state of flux. Individuality is based on the thought "I am this body." From the I-thought arises the being in time: the personality, with its habits, preferences, talents, roles, relationships, and so forth. Bolstered by memory and continuity, the self is a product of past experiences and future expectations. The I-thought does not exist except by thinking of itself or others, and the mind is maintained by projection and objectification.
There is something beyond the I-thought and prior to the personality. The primal "I" is Awareness itself, existing outside of time and space, and therefore eternal and infinite. Awareness is always here now. All that happens is Awareness happening in Awareness. The individual self, others, and the world all take place in Awareness, which is One, Self-existent, and all that is.
