It is believed that the pound cake originated from northern Europe around the early 1700s.
There are many variations of the traditional pound cake, with certain countries and regions having distinctive styles. These can include the addition of flavors such as vanilla or almond extract or adding dried fruit such as currants or cranberries.
Sour cream pound cake is a popular variation in the United States.
In Mexico, the pound cake may add walnuts or raisins but the recipe is very similar. In France, the pound cake is called "quatre-quarts" which means four quarters cake. This is due to the four main ingredients in the cake. In Germany, the pound cake can be marbled or may contain chocolate, almonds, vanilla or rum.
Some pound cakes are stuffed with jelly or cream. Fruit, icing or sprinkles can be added to the top.
