Description
When Andy Stevenson is found dead in his car on a lonely county road from an apparent drug overdose, his wife Melissa is immediately suspicious. Her husband would have taken the freeway home from the client dinner, not a back road through the prairie. And drugs? Andy didn't even like taking over-the-counter meds. And were those ugly bruises on his lifeless body really caused by seatbelt abrasion?
Melissa's questions are met with veiled hostility from the sheriff's office, the coroner, and most surprisingly, the Sacramento law firm where Andy had been a rising star. Desperate to get to the truth, Melissa hires Tom Haydon, a genial, graying private investigator who soon proves to be a determined ally.
But in the wake of another shocking revelation, Melissa all but abandons the nascent investigation. Craving solitude in which to heal, she flees to the New England of her youth and a summer rental on a tiny island off the Maine coast. But she can't outrun the dark forces responsible for Andy's death and soon must face an even uglier truth: that solitude and isolation are not the same thing at all.
