Description
It is Spring 1916. The world is at war. Sherlock Holmes has retired to Sussex and Doctor Watson is working at an auxiliary hospital on the outskirts of London. But when their country calls, the great detective places his skills at the service of the allies, always accompanied by his faithful friend and biographer.
This volume contains four adventures of Conan Doyle's immortal duo.
In 'The Detective at War', our heroes are asked to discover who is leaking secrets to the Germans, allowing them to know who they face across the front line. The puzzle leads them across the English Channel to war-torn France, to encounters with old friends and new, and finally to a dramatic solution.
In 'The Adventure of the Absent Spy', they receive a summons to a mysterious office in London which leads them into danger from German warships and then to neutral Holland, where agents and operatives wage a clandestine front of the war. Among the British, Germans and Dutch, who can they trust as they track down the mysterious Major Wilkes?
In 'The Pickvale Hall Mystery', Watson is persuaded to join Holmes in investigating a double murder at a school in the English Midlands. The school is in poor shape, with the divisions between staff factions. Who did Holmes foil in taking a shot at a third teacher? Where does the German teacher go when he is not at home or at school? What does the escaped German Prisoner of War know?
In 'The Adventure of the Land Ships', a client from years before once again contacts Watson to seek help from Holmes. The three travel to Lincoln, where a terrible new weapon is being built. But who stole the missing plans? A long day of journeys across England culminates in a race to stop British secrets being snatched from the shore.
