Description
Do you like a little wry humor with your murder & mayhem? Then consider the following...
In 1922, a small-town high school basketball coach named Bob Carlisle is arrested for drugging his fiancé and then drowning her in the bathtub. Ironically, he too drowns during an escape attempt.
Or does he?
In 1950, a Central City coaching legend named John Franklin is respected by all, beloved by many, and hated by more than a few.
Who would stop at nothing to see him gone.
As Franklin is preparing his North High Vikings for a run at yet another state tournament title, he learns that Wes Blakely, his ambitious young assistant, who's only in that position because his father-in-law is school board president, may have discovered something from his past that would be the ruin of him if it ever got out.
Carlisle's body was never found.
To find out what his assistant knows and what he's planning to do, Franklin hires Lawrence Mallory, a lawyer turned private investigator, whose daughter, Susanna, is in his freshman world history class. However, he won't tell Mallory what it is he fears may have been unearthed, saying only that it was an "unpleasant incident."
Like murder, perhaps?
Undeterred, Mallory takes the case and goes back to school where he finds a curriculum of murder, obsession, narcissism, and dark secrets from the pasts of nearly everyone he meets. In short order, the school board president's head is almost blown off by a shotgun blast; Mallory uncovers a student gambling ring complete with point shaving and the involvement of adult bookies; and Franklin vanishes leaving the body of a lady of the evening in his house. And if that isn't enough, there's Blakely's flirtatious wife, a gorgeous daddy's girl with seduction on her mind and Mallory in her sights.
With the help of his wife, Kate, who acts as his secretary when they're not trading wisecracks, and Susanna whose goal is to be Central City's first female homicide detective, Mallory will try to find some answers.
But will this family of sleuths find them before another body turns up, quite possibly Mallory's?
SPOILER ALERT: Of course, they will, but you knew that.
Still, it's going to be a wild ride watching them do it.
