Description
William Bellicourt is a megachurch preacher who has turned his considerable ambition to politics. He's aiming high. He wants to become the next president of the United States. His unlikely candidacy is succeeding. He wins the Republican nomination and is given an even chance to defeat his Democratic opponent in the 2024 election. But a giant hurdle suddenly blocks his path to the White House. He is accused of raping a woman in a Portland, Maine, hotel room.
Brittany Faircamp, his accuser, is a young intern on Bellicourt's staff. A mysterious and morose woman, she has nothing but her word to back up her claim. Her allegation is met with fierce resistance. Bellicourt's backers insist it is an outright lie, one that has as its source a sinister plot by the Democrats. Conservative media launches an all-out attack on her.
Connor Lundgren, a journalist with too many faults, investigates Faircamp's claim. He uncovers evidence that might support her allegation. But he jeopardizes the case and his reputation by falling into an inappropriate relationship.
Damien Bligh, a district attorney with ambitions of his own, pursues the case against Bellicourt. That leads to an indictment and a trial less than two months before November's national election. The verdict will likely determine the nation's next president.
Faircamp's allegation, Lundgren's investigation and Bligh's prosecution drive an even bigger wedge into the country's volatile political divide. The media furiously spins the story to suit its different purposes. All eyes are on the courthouse and whether anyone can say what really happened behind that hotel room door.
