Description
What happens when a girl is allowed to follow her passion, even if it means not always seeing things as others do? For PJ, there's clearly nothing wrong with walking on your hands while grocery shopping, although her mother thinks feet are best for that kind of activity. Upside Down is Right Side Up is a fun look at the world of a 9-year-old girl, PJ, who enters an unfamiliar place that has new rules, new roles, and where few things are ever right side up! What unfolds is a love for gymnastics and deeper respect for differences.
• Heartwarming and inspirational story about diversity and friendship
• Young readers ages 5 years and older
"I love the part of the book where PJ is doing a cartwheel in the grocery store. This reminds me so much of myself at that age. I remember doing cartwheels and handstands everywhere, stores, church, school, and the playground. I could never get enough of being upside down! The book also addresses the difficulty gymnasts of color may face. Many times, they are the only person of color in their group. That can be difficult for someone so young to understand and process. The book is a great tool to help parents talk with their children about uncomfortable and difficult situations.
This book is a labor of love! Love for the sport Racine dedicated so many years to, love for the great accomplishments she achieved, and love for those future black and brown gymnasts who will be inspired to keep doing cartwheels down the grocery store aisles."
