Description
This is a thoroughly revised edition, with a better and expanded description of all the covered topics, with the help of a large number of new examples. Over hundred solved problems in the book cover almost every variation of problems related to different topics.
A number of good books on Engineering Drawing are available. There is perhaps no need for yet another book in this area. However, all these books are over-descriptive, and contain a large number of irrelevant problems which are outside the syllabi of most engineering colleges. As a result, these books can only be used as reference books, not as textbooks. Students have to use their own judgement as to what to read and what to skip. Therefore, a need was felt to present a book which students actually need for examination purposes. This has been the aim in this book, though it does include some challenging problems as well.
A unique feature of the book is its quality of figures, some of which are pictorial views (isometric-style 3D representation). This makes three-dimensional construction methods, and converting these to orthographic projections, easier to understand. Moreover, quite a few figures are in multiple colours, for better clarity.
The following topics are covered:
• Pictorial and Orthographic Projections
• Projection of Points, Straight lines and Lamina
• Projection of Solids and their Sections
• Interpenetration of Solids
• Surface Development of Right and Oblique Solids
• Isometric Projections
• AutoCAD
The book follows the convention of the First-Angle Projection, but clearly explains the differences and similarities between the first-angle and the third-angle projections, so as to make the descriptions suitable for both the conventions.
The book is broadly divided into three parts. The first part consists of four problem sheets, each of which is topic-specific, as can be seen in the Contents. These problem sheets generally cover the whole engineering-drawing syllabus of most engineering colleges, and are designed for a regular engineering-drawing course spanning over one semester. Each sheet can be completed in about nine hours, i.e., in three classes of three-hour duration each. Thus, all four sheets would require 12 three-hour classes which is the usual available time in a semester. Therefore, these sheets can be directly adopted as classwork for an engineering-drawing course, without any change. Solutions to all the problems in these sheets, along with the relevant theory and the required explanations, are provided, which would make the teaching/learning an enjoyable experience.
The second part of the book contains a large number of additional problems and their solutions, from all the topics, for further practice.
All the drawings in the book are made in AutoCAD, for accuracy.
Be informed that students and faculty members of most of the recognized educational institutions are eligible for free educational license of all Autodesk products, including the latest version of AutoCAD. The procedure to download it is explained in the book.
The third part has a discussion on AutoCAD. A thorough discussion on AutoCAD is not practical in a book which is not exclusively dedicated to AutoCAD. Moreover, in an era of software awareness, most people generally have some basic information about all popular softwares. Also, quite a few features of most softwares have a basic similarity. Therefore, it was decided to include a discussion on only two important topics of AutoCAD (related to isometric drawings), which are lesser-known and follow a typical procedure. However, quite a few basic commands are also discussed in sufficient details, so that readers not having adequate exposure to AutoCAD do not feel handicapped. The version used for explanation is AutoCAD LT 2025. Therefore, if you have a different version, minor variations can be there at some places.
