Sixteen-year-old 'Jane Smith' seems to be facing them, but she doesn't understand why. After waking up in a Medical Center with no idea who she is or how she got there, Jane's informed that her parents have been killed in a car accident, and she will be sent to The Amicy Academy, where she will train to pay back her debt to society by fighting in the ongoing war for Region Four. At The Academy, Jane quickly finds herself drawn to a group of other 'cadets' that seem to have too much in common with her for it to be a coincidence, pulling her down a different path than any she would've chosen for herself. After being plagued by migraines, nightmares, confusing visions of a life that can't be real, and a sense of lingering familiarity around people she couldn't possibly know, she starts to question if anything she's been told about herself and the world she came from is true.
In this dark, upper YA dystopian, Carlisle's Project Auden blends the author's familiar themes of tragedy, humor and heartbreak with action-packed thrill, secrets, and betrayal, once again asking the question; 'is freedom really free?'
