Devil's Chase
As Rebecca stepped into the elevator, trying to swallow the tears that were threatening to fall, a man pushed in through the already closing doors with his one arm held in a sling, and the other holding a duffel bag bumping her tote bag out of her hands. An assortment of tampons, lip gloss, health bars, coins, sunglasses and her favorite book all lay scattered on the elevator floor.
"Great!" Rebecca scowled as she started pulling all the items towards her, she felt her face heating with shame as she pushed the tampons first into the tote bag. "Don't worry, there is absolutely no need for you to help or apologize." She took a moment to glare at the tall man now leaning against the elevator wall. He was tall, toned and tanned. His face was ruggedly handsome, marked with scars and chiseled jaw. When she felt the flicker of desire sneak up on her, her temper flared even more.
"Don't look at me; it's not my fault you decided to cart half of your life to a doctor's appointment." His voice was deep, the tone callous and irritated; as if was her fault that he pushed into the elevator causing the whole thing. "Typical!" Rebecca bit back as she put the last things back in the bag and straightened up. She couldn't help but look his way again when she caught his eyes focused on her; they were a dark cobalt blue, which looked out of place on his rugged face. "And anyway, it isn't my whole life, just half of it!"
Chase couldn't help but grin at the disheveled girl. She looked barely old enough to carry a tote bag, never mind coming to doctor's appointments on her own. "Next time leave the bag in the car with your mom." The elevator doors pinged open, and just like that he was gone.
