Throughout Christian history, when people sought to deepen their relationship with God they went into the desert. They pursued isolation. People who go to their wilderness place are imitating Jesus in his isolation. There are many times in the gospels where Jesus deliberately removes himself from people. He disappears off to a deserted place to pray (Mark 1.32). He dismisses the crowds and goes up a mountain on his own (Matthew 14.23). He sits by a well in the desert (John 4.5). He prays on his own on the night before his death (Luke 22.41).

To walk in the wilderness is to be willing to have our lives stripped back; to go without; to slow down; to empty ourselves in order that God might work in us. Sometimes circumstances do the stripping back for us and sometimes we do it ourselves by choosing Lenten disciplines. Lent is the time we remember Jesus' wandering through the wilderness. We all have a wilderness experience during our Christian life. Lent provides the opportunity for us to examine, alongside Jesus, our time in the wilderness and seek to direction and meaning. Your own wilderness experience may not be pleasant, know that God has not forgotten you and is working in your life. He is using the experience for your good and to work out his purposes in you. He wants you to find your identity in him alone and to make you the person you were meant to be.

Remember you are enough. Whatever you've done or achieved in life; whatever others think of you; whatever you think of yourself - know today that God says you are enough.

We're very good at anaesthetising our pain with noise and activity. Have faith that God is using the wilderness experience for your good. God led the Israelites into the desert for a reason. God used the wilderness to forge their identity through hardship, trial and to prepare them for when they did finally enter the Promised Land. He may be doing the same thing to us as we go through our own spiritual desert.
Pray
Loving God, show me how I anaesthetise myself from the pain and sadness in my life, be it through food, alcohol, poor choice relationships or other stuff. Let me recognise them now and name them out loud.
Loving God, please give me the strength to be released from the control of these things. I do want to change.
Loving God, help me to find my way out of the wilderness and walk back to you, stronger, refreshed, ready to do your will and walk your walk. Amen
Please consider leaving a positive review so that Christians may find this book.
May the Lord Jesus Christ walk with you in any wilderness that you know and the blessing of God; Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you now and always. Amen.
